The Census Shouldn’t Be a Citizenship Test

In the event that a Republican president returns to the White House in 2025, a coalition of conservative groups is preparing for a chance to shape the country’s next set of census results.

Part of their plan includes reviving a citizenship question, aligning the mission of the government agency in charge of the next tally with “conservative principles”, and including other Trump-era moves that threaten the accuracy of the 2030 national head count.

The question “Is this person a citizen of the United States?” on forms likely discourage many households with Latino or Asian American residents from getting counted in population totals.

“I’ve never heard articulated a justification for the citizenship question that is not fairly obviously a veil to disguise racial and partisan intent,” says Thomas Saenz, president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Republicans are attempting to align the Census Bureau’s mission with conservative principles, and we’re not having it.
