Tell Threads to Stop Election Disinformation

Threads — the latest social media platform unveiled by Meta — already has tens of millions of users. And just months before its launch, Meta laid off several members of the elections team, the team that historically tackled disinformation in years past. Now, as more and more users join Threads, the company has yet to outline a plan to curb disinformation on the site.

During recent past election cycles, disinformation around voting registration, polling places, and candidates was rampant on social media. Facebook was used to target and manipulate swing voters, and information about Trump’s “stolen election” was seemingly flooding timelines.

Meta now has election disinformation policies in place for Facebook and Instagram, but has yet to publish any similar policies for Threads. While Meta claims the same policies are in place for Threads, it is clear that Threads needs a stand-alone policy.

Americans deserve accessibility to accurate voter information. As a large social media platform, there is a responsibility to uphold elections integrity and put a policy in place.
