According to Treasury Department estimates, the top 1% of income earners in the United States evade roughly $163 billion in taxes each and every year.

And while it costs some money to conduct audits, according to a new paper from economists, auditing those same top 1% of earners would yield $4.25 per dollar spent – a huge win for taxpayers and the federal government.
