Tell the EPA: Ban Carcinogenic Vinyl Chloride

In 1974, the United States classified vinyl chloride as a carcinogen due to studies showing conclusively that it causes cancer. Shortly after that, it was banned in aerosols

But this dangerous chemical is still being used in products like PVC pipes today. As a result, it is shipped around the country, often by train.

Tragically, in February 2023, a train carrying more than 100,000 gallons of vinyl chloride derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, forcing nearby residents to evacuate.

While we don't yet know the long-term health consequences of the derailment, in the days and weeks that followed, local residents reported sore throats, headaches, coughing and nausea.

Now, the Environmental Protection Agency has finally announced that it will begin a formal review of vinyl chloride under the Toxic Substances Control Act.

This review is long overdue – and that's why we're calling on the EPA to ban vinyl chloride before another local community is put in harm's way.
