Tell Republicans: Support a Ban on Assault Weapons

On September 15, a gunman armed with an AK-47-style rifle attempted to assassinate Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf course. 

Thankfully, Trump was unharmed, but this attack underscores a much larger problem: easy access to high-powered assault weapons. These deadly firearms, designed for combat, are often used in mass shootings and assassination attempts alike. 

Experts agree that these weapons of war have no place in civilian hands, and the overwhelming majority of Americans support common-sense gun reform. This latest incident is a chilling reminder of the urgent need for gun reform.

What do this attempted assassination and most school shootings have in common? They were carried out by individuals with easy access to weapons of war. 

The tragic truth is that our national gun violence epidemic will persist until Republican politicians find the courage to stand up to the NRA and pass meaningful reforms. Instead, Trump and other Republicans have made it easier for mentally ill individuals to access guns by rolling back crucial regulations.

We must condemn all forms of political violence, and banning assault weapons is one of the clearest ways to make us all safer—including Trump, public officials, and schoolchildren across America.
