The rent, as they say, is too damn high. Rents jumped a shocking 30.4% nationwide between 2019 and 2023, while wages during that same period rose just 20.2%. The average rental price is $2,011, and the majority of Americans pay more than 30% of their income on rent. These numbers are out of control — and there's no sign of any slowdown as private equity and greedy landlords squeeze working families for every cent they have.

President Biden has proposed a flat 5% cap on rent increases in units owned by corporations, which hold over HALF of all American rental homes! This would allow wages to catch up to rent increases and stem the leeching of the middle class's wealth by the megarich. This is a huge deal and needs to be passed ASAP!

Corporate landlords have been busted using algorithms to artificially inflate prices and others face lawsuits for colluding in order to set rental prices above market. They'll stop at nothing to extract every last ounce of wealth from their tenants, who they see as just statistics on a profit sheet and not people with families who need a place to live.

Housing is a human right, and it's becoming harder and harder to find affordable housing in America. It's time for Congress to stem the bleeding and cap corporate rent increases.
