Senator Susan Collins: Support a Ban on Assault Weapons

On Wednesday evening, a man carrying a military-style assault weapon walked into a crowded bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine and started shooting indiscriminately.

According to the owner of the bowling alley, it was crowded at the time, with roughly 100 people – including 20 children – enjoying an evening of bowling.

Details are still coming in, but initial reports indicate that at least 22 people were killed and up to 50 more were injured.

The sad fact is, horrific mass shootings like this will continue until elected officials at both the state and federal levels pass common sense gun control legislation.

But unfortunately, Maine's senior U.S. Senator Susan Collins opposes a ban on assault weapons like the one used Wednesday in Lewiston.

Sign the petition demanding a ban on assault weapons and other common-sense gun safety legislation.

Maine has some of the weakest gun control laws in the United States. The state allows anyone over age 21 to carry guns, openly or concealed, without a permit.

It also lacks a red flag law to keep guns out of the hands of people, like Wednesday's shooter in Maine, who clearly shouldn't have them.

From Maine and other state legislatures to the United States Congress, it's time for elected officials to stop making excuses and pass gun control legislation that will save lives.
