Investigate “Biblical Prophecy” Claims About Iran War

Disturbing reports suggest some military leaders may be framing the war with Iran as part of biblical "end times."

Members of Congress are demanding answers after allegations that U.S. commanders described the conflict in religious terms, invoking the prophecy of Armageddon and suggesting the war could fulfill biblical predictions. According to complaints from service members, some troops were told the conflict with Iran could be part of God’s plan.

Now lawmakers are calling on the Department of Defense Inspector General to investigate. The Inspector General has a clear responsibility to determine whether Pentagon leaders or military commanders invoked religious prophecy when discussing the war with Iran and whether such rhetoric violated Department of Defense rules or the Constitution.

The stakes could not be higher. The United States military serves people of every faith and people with no religious affiliation at all. Service members swear an oath to defend the Constitution—not any particular religion or prophecy.

If military leaders are portraying war as a divine mission, it risks undermining morale, alienating troops who do not share those beliefs, and eroding the separation of church and state that protects religious freedom for everyone. Decisions about war and peace must be based on strategy, law, and democratic accountability—not theology.

The Department of Defense Inspector General has the authority to examine internal communications, interview witnesses, and determine whether senior officials improperly used religious rhetoric when discussing military operations or addressing troops.

Tell the Department of Defense Inspector General: Launch a full investigation into reports that military leaders invoked biblical “end times” prophecy when discussing the war with Iran.

The petition to the Department of Defense Inspector General reads: "Launch a full investigation into allegations that military leaders invoked biblical end-times prophecy or Armageddon rhetoric when discussing the war with Iran, and ensure the U.S. military upholds the Constitution and the separation of church and state."
