Hold Texas Gov. Abbott Accountable for Tragic Migrant Deaths

The waters of the Rio Grande just witnessed an unspeakable tragedy — a woman and two young children, lives extinguished in their quest for safety, their last moments marred by a policy that defies our nation's values.

Under the directive of Texas Governor Greg Abbott's Operation Lone Star, lives are being lost and human dignity is trampled upon. Our Border Patrol, trained in lifesaving efforts, stood ready to rescue, but their hands were tied by state officials following orders that conflict with federal authority and, more importantly, with our shared human values.

The recent drownings are not isolated incidents; they are direct consequences of policies that prioritize politics over people.

We cannot remain silent while migrants seeking asylum and safety are denied their rights to life-saving assistance. As a nation, we must uphold the values of compassion, justice, and international cooperation. We must ensure that our borders are not battlegrounds but gateways to a world where human rights and dignity are upheld.

We demand an end to the dangerous and unlawful practices under Operation Lone Star. We call for policies that reflect our commitment to human life and the rule of law.

As the American Civil Liberties Union has warned, the implications of Texas' actions are far-reaching, tearing at the fabric of our communities, instilling fear, and potentially separating families. The ACLU's legal challenge to such policies is a beacon of hope, a reminder that we have the power to change course and align our actions with our principles.

The heartbreaking story of the lives lost along the border is a clarion call for us to stand together against cruelty and inhumanity. Let us honor their memory by demanding justice and ensuring that no more lives are lost to the treacherous tides of inhumane policies.
