Fix the Broken Free Application for Federal Student Aid

A simplified free application for Federal Student Aid finally went live after delays — but there’s a big problem.

It’s likely few, if any, of the millions of students applying for college have been able to successfully submit an application. And even if they do, their information won’t be sent to schools until late January.

With the delayed timeline, colleges still might be able to get financial aid award offers done by late March, but if not, it will be a complete disaster.

“Families will not be able to get financial aid offers in a timely manner. Already, students who applied early action or early decision do not have award offers,” said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz.

Students and families already have enough to worry about leading up to college. The last thing they need at that challenging time is to carry the burden of dealing with a broken federal student aid process.
