Don't Let the Navy Swap a Black WWII Hero's Name for Trump

The Navy is reconsidering plans to name its new aircraft carrier after WWII hero of Pearl Harbor, Doris Miller. Instead, they could name it after Trump.

Doris Miller helped defend US forces during the attack on Pearl Harbor – helping care for his wounded commanding officer and taking control of an anti-aircraft gun, without any training. He fired at the Japanese until he ran out of ammunition and the ship started to sink.

He became the first Black recipient of the Navy Cross.

The USS Doris Miller would make history as the first aircraft carrier named after a Black American — and the first named for an enlisted sailor.

We can't let the Trump administration take this historic honor away from a true American hero. Tell Navy Secretary Hung Cao: Keep Doris Miller's name on the aircraft carrier.

The potential name change comes after efforts from Secretary Pete Hegseth to remove names considered selected for diversity, equity, and inclusion. This includes renaming the USNS Harvey Milk and changing the names of several US Army bases back to names of confederate officers.

Navy ships should honor the heroism and sacrifice of those who served our country. Doris Miller represents the very best of that tradition. Stripping Doris Miller's name from this carrier would dishonor a man who risked his life for his fellow sailors and his country.

Add your name to now and tell Navy Secretary Hung Cao to keep Doris Miller's name on the new aircraft carrier.

The petition to Secretary Cao reads: "Keep Doris Miller's name on the new aircraft carrier and preserve this historic honor for an American hero."
